Meet Stephen A. Sbanotto

MS, LPC, CSAT-S, CMAT, RAE, RACS

Stephen A. Sbanotto is the Front Range Executive Director for APN Denver, where he brings deep clinical expertise, leadership experience, and a passion for transformative care. With more than a decade of advanced clinical training and specialization, Stephen is committed to elevating client outcomes, supporting clinical teams, and expanding APN’s reach across the Front Range community.

A Licensed Professional Counselor, Stephen earned his Master’s Degree in Community Counseling with a dual emphasis in Marriage & Family Therapy from John Brown University in 2009. He went on to pursue extensive postgraduate training through the International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals (IITAP), where he is a Certified Sexual Addiction Therapist and Supervisor (CSAT-S) and a Certified Multiple Addictions Therapist (CMAT) with emphases in disordered eating and chemical addictions. He also holds specialized certifications for serving LGBTQIA2+ clients as both a Rainbow Advocate Educator (RAE) and Rainbow Advocate Clinical Specialist (RACS).

In addition to his clinical work, Stephen serves on the IITAP faculty, teaching in their Chemical Dependency track, and acts as IITAP’s international consultant for sex addiction treatment. He is also trained in EMDR trauma therapy and is deeply committed to helping clients identify and heal the underlying wounds that often drive addiction, relational distress, and mental health challenges. His leadership is grounded in clinical excellence, authenticity, and a profound belief in the transformative power of holistic, long-term healing.

Background and Education

Throughout his career, Stephen has been recognized for his integrative, trauma-informed approach and his ability to support individuals, couples, and families in addressing some of the most complex and sensitive areas of emotional and behavioral health. His expertise spans trauma, sexual and chemical addiction, relational dynamics, identity development, and recovery-oriented care for diverse populations.

Stephen’s role at APN combines his clinical expertise and leadership strengths, guiding program development, supporting interdisciplinary teams, and ensuring that clients at our Denver location continue to receive exceptional, accessible, and inclusive care.

Outside of his work in mental health and addiction treatment, Stephen is an accomplished performer who has been singing and acting on stage since 1989. He is a proud member of the Denver Gay Men’s Chorus and is well-known among friends and colleagues for absolutely owning the microphone at weekly karaoke nights. His creativity, authenticity, and warmth are evident both in his artistry and in his work, which supports clients and clinicians alike.
